Feast day: July 3
Saint Thomas was one of Jesus’ Twelve Apostles. He is perhaps most known for the following remark: “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe” (John 20:25, NABRE). This remark has caused Thomas to be remembered as Doubting Thomas. (The painting here, The Incredulity of Saint Thomas, is by the renowned artist Caravaggio, who is known for chiaroscuro, that is, dramatic contrast between light and darkness.)
After witnessing the resurrected Jesus, Thomas proclaimed unequivocally his belief in and devotion to Jesus, his Lord. Thomas emerged from the darkness of unbelief and rediscovered his faith in the Light.
