Blessed Fra Angelico (1395–1455)

Blessed Fra Angelico (1395–1455)

Patron saint of Catholic artists

February 18

Fra Angelico was a Dominican brother in Italy. The title “Fra” is an abbreviation of “Frater,” which is Latin for “brother.” Even as a young person, Fra Angelico showed an interest in both art and the spiritual life.

When he entered the Dominicans, he was given the name Giovanni (John), but he was always called Fra Angelico (Angelic Brother or Angelic Friar) due to his beautiful art. As a Dominican, he became famous as an artist and was called upon to decorate churches. He was also called to Rome to decorate chapels at the Vatican.

For Fra Angelico, his art was a prayer. He was an artist, but he was also a humble and modest person. He died in Rome, at the Dominican monastery. He was buried in the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. His motto during life was, “He who does Christ’s work must stay with Christ always.” Fra Angelico expressed his faith in Christ, and his love for Christ and our Blessed Mother, through his paintings. It is important for everyone to find ways to express their faith and love through their actions!
