Saint Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 297–373)

Saint Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 297–373)

Feast day: May 2

Saint Athanasius was one of the Church’s most dedicated soldiers against Arianism. His strong defense against this heresy did not sit well with some, and he was sent into exile five times. However, Athanasius kept persevering for what he knew to be right.

He was also an advocate for spiritual reading. He said, “You will not see anyone who is really striving after his advancement who is not given to spiritual reading.” Saint Athanasius was named a Doctor of the Church.
