Saints Anne and Joachim (first century)

Saints Anne and Joachim (first century)

Patron saints of Brittany and Canada and of women in labor

Feast day: July 26

According to an ancient Church tradition, Joachim and Anne are the names of Mary’s parents. Though we do not know much about them, we do know they raised Mary to practice her faith and to be a strong and courageous person and a devoted mother.

In the image on this page, Joachim and Anne are presenting their daughter, Mary, in the Temple. The feast of the Presentation of Mary in the Temple is celebrated on November 21. Joachim and Anne were also Jesus’ grandparents, so in a sense, their feast day on July 26 is “Grandparents’ Day.” We would, of course, not be here if it were not for our own grandparents.
